Despite the innocuous sounding name, the launch of planet Earth's first artificial moon, Sputnik 1, by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957, changed the world and set in motion events which resulted in the creation of NASA and the race to the Moon. Sputnik 1 was a 184 pound, 22 inch diameter sphere with four whip antennas connected to battery powered transmitters. The transmitters broadcast a continuous "beeping" signal to an astounded earthbound audience for 23 days. A short month later, on November 3, the Soviet Union followed this success by launching a dog into orbit aboard Sputnik 2.

It's an e-mail chain letter claiming that Mars is about to come closer than ever in history and will look as big and bright as the full Moon with the naked eye. If your well-meaning great-aunt or your cousin's brother-in-law's dog hasn't sent it to you yet, it's probably just a matter of time. What's going on is this. Back in 2003 (that's 2003 with a "3" on the end, folks), Mars had an especially favorable opposition, coming close enough to Earth to appear 25 arcseconds wide. By comparison, Mars is about 8" wide now (August 2007) and will grow to 16" wide around its opposition in December 2007. "The Mars chain letter is not a bad thing, it's a good thing! It is an immunization. If you make a fool of yourself by sending it to your friends and family, you may be embarrassed enough not to send them the next e-mail chain letter you get, which may not be so harmless."

Die Pariser Modeszene nannte ihn einen "Meister der Pose". Willy Maywald war in den vierziger und fünfziger Jahren ein Chronist der Avantgarde - als Mode-, Theater- und Filmfotograf. Der 1985 verstorbene Maywald prägte den fotografischen Blick auf die Haute Couture der Nachkriegszeit. Nun ehrt ihn seine Heimatstadt Kleve in einer Ausstellung, auf der 100 Modefotografien und Porträts zu sehen sind.

ممنوعیت دوچرخه سواری زنان در اصفهان

clipped from www.bbc.co.uk به گزارش روزنامه سرمایه، چاپ تهران، نیروی انتظامی استان اصفهان در روز سیزدهم مرداد اطلاعیه ای منتشر کرده که در آن آمده است: "با بانوانی که اقدام به اسکیت سواری و دوچرخه سواری در معابر عمومی می کنند، برخورد می شود." در این اطلاعیه نیروی انتظامی به زنان توصیه کرده در صورتی که قصد استفاده از "دوچرخه و اسکیت و اسکوتر" را دارند می توانند به پارک یا ورزشگاه های مختص زنان مراجعه کنند. نیروی انتظامی اصفهان درباره دلیل صدور این اطلاعیه توضیح داده است که "اخیرا مشاهده می شود که تعدادی از بانوان به بهانه ورزش یا تفریح، با وضع بسیار زننده اقدام به دوچرخه سواری یا اسکیت سواری در معابر عمومی می کنند." در این اطلاعیه، اقدام زنان دوچرخه سوار و اسکیت سوار خلاف مقررات و آئین نامه راهنمایی و رانندگی قلمداد شده و نیروی انتظامی اصفهان تاکید کرده "این نوع ورزش بانوان در معابر عمومی باعث جریحه دار شدن عفت عمومی و در برخی از مواقع ایجاد تصادفات و بروز خسارات جانی و مالی می شود."

In fact, though open star clusters are usually much younger, the stars of M67 are likely around 4 billion years old, about the same age and with about the same elemental abundances as the Sun. Open clusters are almost always younger because they are dispersed over time as they encounter other stars, interstellar clouds, and experience gravitational tides while orbiting the center of our galaxy. Still, M67 contains over 500 stars or so and lies some 2,800 light-years away in the constellation Cancer. At that estimated distance, M67 would be about 12 light-years across.

درخواست تعزير خاتمي

دادگاه ويژه روحانيت قول پي گيري داد

clipped from www.roozonline.com گروهي از طلاب حوزه علميه قم به علت آنچه "هتك حيثيت روحانيت و اعمال خلاف شرع و شؤون روحانيت" ناميده شد، از سيد محمد خاتمي رييس‌جمهور سابق ايران شكايت كردند و خواستار بازداشت وي شدند. اين گروه با امضاي طوماري بيست متري كه به دادستان دادگاه ويژه روحانيت ارائه شد، خاتمي را به "زير پا گذاشتن احكام و موازين شرع با لباس مقدس روحانيت" و همچنين "انحرافات اعتقادي" متهم كردند. اين خبر را اولين بار سايت رجانيوز كه به عنوان ارگان غير رسمي هواداران احمدي نژاد شناخته مي‌شود، منتشر ساخت و پيش از آن نيز در سايت‌هاي اين جريان، اخباري مبني بر جمع‌آوري امضا از طلاب براي شكايت از خاتمي شنيده مي‌شد. اصلاح طلبان اين اقدام طلاب تندرو را از جنس ترور شخصيت و با هدف حذف يا تخريب خاتمي در عرصه سياسي ارزيابي كرده‌اند. سايت نوروز وابسته به جبهه مشاركت اين شكايت را در راستاي افزايش برخوردها و تهديدها و شبنامه‌ها و فشارها عليه وي و ناشي از فعال شدن وي در انتخابات مجلس هشتم دانسته است.

Hossein Alizadeh - Endless Vision (2003)

Endless Vision (nominated for Grammy award 2007 for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2006), is a live recording with Hossein Alizadeh & Jivan Gasparyan on stage in the Niavaran Palace outdoor venue in Tehran (Sept.4-6, 2003) with more than 12,000 spectators. Songs in Azeri, Armenian, and Farsi; Afsaneh Rasaee's emotional singing stands out even though she can't sing solo on stage in a live performance in Iran. Jivan Gasparyan sings the Armenian lyrics with the calmness and assurance of a true master musician. The Farsi lyrics give the song a whole other dimension when they start.

Antipopes are typically those supported by a fairly significant faction of cardinals. Persons who claim to be the Pope but have few followers, such as the modern Sedevacantist antipopes, are not generally counted as antipopes (though they technically are), and therefore ignored for regnal numbering. In several cases it is hard to tell which was, in fact, the lawful Pope and which the antipope. In its list of the Popes, the Holy See's annual directory, Annuario Pontificio, attaches to the name of Pope Leo VIII (963-965) the following note: "At this point, as again in the mid-eleventh century, we come across elections in which problems of harmonizing historical criteria and those of theology and canon law make it impossible to decide clearly which side possessed the legitimacy whose factual existence guarantees the unbroken lawful succession of the Successors of Saint Peter. The uncertainty that in some cases results has made it advisable to abandon the assignation of successive numbers in the list of the Popes." In all cases it is clear that whichever was the Pope, the other was an antipope, since the claim of each was in fact widely accepted. Hippolytus (d. 235) is commonly recognized as the earliest antipope, as he protested against Pope Callixtus I and headed a separate group within the Roman Church. Hippolytus was later reconciled to Callixtus's second successor Pope Pontian, when both were condemned to the mines on the island of Sardinia. He has been canonized by the Church. Whether two or more persons have been confused in this account of Hippolytus,[1] and whether Hippolytus actually declared himself to be the Bishop of Rome, remains unclear, especially since no such claim is found in the extant writings attributed to him.
